THE SINK

ITA
ENG

The first floor of the house features another architectural element of great value, which emphasizes the residential function of this space. This is the sink, consisting of a large three-level niche, divided by sandstone slabs. Note the convex shoulders of the lowest level, which support the slab above: a solution of great elegance, almost modern in concept. Each level also has a drain to the outside to allow water to flow away: the middle sink also has a small sandstone slab to divert the water away from the façade.
However, one question must be asked: where is the water, which is essential for animals and humans? During the restoration work, no wells were found, either inside or outside. This is probably because, not far from the fortified house, to the southeast, runs the Rio Fabiola, which originates from the slopes of Monte Sporno and flows into the Parma River in Langhirano. The public road that passes along the side of Malavilla once led to the stream, which was then used to supply drinking water and water the grazing cows. But that's not all: the road led to a building next to the stream, probably a mill or a fulling mill, i.e., a stone building used for felting wool. Some remains of it still exist.
